A few days in Da Nang & Hoi An

Da Nang and Hoi An make a lovely combination for a short getaway.

You get the convenience of a modern coastal city, beautiful beaches, plenty of good food, and a historic town that’s best explored at a slower pace.

If you’re planning a trip, here are a few things I’d keep in mind.

1. Don’t try to squeeze everything into one day

Da Nang and Hoi An are close enough to combine in one trip, but they have very different atmospheres.

Da Nang is more suited to beach days, cafés, and exploring the city. Hoi An, on the other hand, is a place I’d leave plenty of time for wandering around.

Rather than rushing between attractions, I’d spend a couple of days in Da Nang and dedicate at least one full day to Hoi An.

If you have more time, even better.

2. Visit Hoi An in the late afternoon

Hoi An is particularly charming as the sun starts to set.

The old town is full of narrow streets, traditional buildings, small shops, and lanterns. It’s worth exploring without a strict itinerary.

I’d arrive in the afternoon, take my time walking around, stop for coffee, and stay until the evening when the lanterns light up the streets.

One practical tip: wear comfortable shoes. You’ll probably end up walking much more than expected.

3. Leave room for food

Central Vietnam has plenty of dishes worth trying.

In Da Nang, look out for mì Quảng, bún chả cá, and bánh tráng cuốn thịt heo.

In Hoi An, cao lầu and bánh mì are obvious choices.

My advice is simple: don’t plan every meal around famous restaurants. Sometimes, a small local place with a short menu is all you need.

4. Choose your accommodation based on your itinerary

If you’re mainly interested in beaches and city attractions, staying in Da Nang makes sense.

If you want to enjoy Hoi An in the evening without worrying about transportation, spending a night there is worth considering.

For a short trip, I’d prioritize a convenient location over an elaborate hotel itinerary.

5. Don’t forget to slow down

It’s easy to turn a short trip into a checklist of attractions.

But one of the things I enjoy most about travelling is having enough time to do absolutely nothing in particular.

A long breakfast, an afternoon coffee, or an unplanned walk can sometimes become the most memorable part of a trip.

Da Nang and Hoi An are a good combination for exactly that kind of getaway.

A little planning helps. Leaving some room for spontaneity helps even more.
